Snohomish, founded in 1859, was the original county seat. It was a port city which used the river to transport goods. Between 1880 and 1920, many Victorian and other fine homes were built, and many remain today.
Snohomish means "gathering people” in the language of the Salish Indians, who lived in the area. It has both a historic residential and commercial district. Snohomish was known as the Garden City, and numerous native plants and gardens make for an enjoyable walking tour.
